Neighbourhood Vibes

Recreation

Since the area is known for its music scene, make sure to check out a concert at one of the venues like Neumo’s, pick through a record store like Sonic Boom, or do the extreme and attend the Capitol Hill Block Party in July. You can also say hello to the Jimi Hendrix statue on the corner of Broadway and Pine. If you’re into film, see a movie at the Landmark Harvard Exit – a classic building turned into theaters. Despite being one of the most densely populated areas of the city, Capitol Hill also has a surprising amount of green space, including Volunteer Park, Cal Anderson Park, and Interlaken Park, not to mention the Washington Parks Arboretum on the northeast corner.

EAT

Sample flights of cold brew, espresso, and original blend coffee at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery (*1124 Pike St), or, for a hearty and hilarious weekend brunch, nab a table at Julia’s on Broadway (300 Broadway E), where diner classics and talented drag queens are the stars. Open from lunch to late night, Little Neon Taco (1011 Boren Ave) serves Mexican fare with modern flair; don’t miss the mole chicken wings or the carnitas torta. Enjoy creative Japanese cuisine with a three-, five-, or seven-course prix fixe menu at upscale Adana (1449 E Pine St), and save room for a s’mores-style molten chocolate cake made with smoked chocolate at Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery (1650 E Olive Way)

SHOP

It’s easy to lose track of time browsing the two floors of bookshelves at Elliott Bay Book Company (1521 10th Ave), which boasts an impressive selection of fiction and non-fiction by local authors. Marvel at the hodgepodge of quirky collectibles and vintage home decor at No Parking on Pike (1102 E Pike St) or make like a local, cup of joe in hand, and trawl through the new and used vinyl at Porchlight Coffee and Records (1517 14th Ave). Tucked-away Chophouse Row (*1424 11th Ave) arcade is home to several boutiques offering locally made artisan goods like the shibori-dyed leather sneakers at Moo-Young (1424 11th Ave, Ste C1) and the fine handmade jewelry at Honed by Claire Kinder(1424 11th Ave, Ste B).
